July- Sleep Importance

The Operators’ Health Center (OHC) is highlighting the importance of Sleep for the month of July 2018.

The right amount of quality sleep can protect your mental and physical health, quality of life and safety. Ongoing sleep deficiency can increase your risk for some chronic diseases and can affect how well you think, react, work, learn and get along with others.

Stages of sleep:

  1. Stage 1: Drowsy feeling, nodding off, aware of surroundings
  2. Stage 2: Deeper sleep, can be easily awakened
  3. Stage 3 & 4: Deep sleep, difficult to awaken
  4. Stage 5: Rapid Eye Movement (REM) or dream sleep

Factors that can disturb sleep:

  • Stress
  • Environmental changes
  • Poor sleep hygiene
  • Illnesses
  • Sleep apnea
  • Insomnia
  • Medication

What to avoid before bed:

Heavy meals

Strenuous exercise


Caffeine, nicotine and alcohol
